Both György Ligeti and Robert Heppener (born in the 1920s) belong to the generation that laid the foundation for the postwar avant-garde. ” Lux Aeterna,” used by Stanley Kubrick in his film *2001: A Space Odyssey*, marked the emergence of a new musical language. The later Sonata for Solo Viola evokes both the polyphony of the 14th century and certain forms of ethnic music. *Im Gestein*, a song cycle based on poems by Paul Celan—for which Heppener won the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize in 1993—was recorded here for the first time in 2008.
“With brilliant renditions of Ligeti’s enchanting *Lux aeterna* and the incredibly beautiful *Hölderlin Fantasies*, Peter Heppeners’ *Im Gestein* may not be all that radically individual, but it shines and moves the listener as well.”
