discover

The internationally renowned composer, organist, organ builder, and music teacher Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) was known in his time as the “Orpheus of Amsterdam.” His significant contributions to Franco-Flemish polyphony include both French psalms, closely aligned with the principles of the Reformation, and sacred vocal works in Latin, one of which is the Magnificat.

This album features psalm settings in French (Du fonds de ma pensée, Ainsi qu’on oit le cerf bruire) as well as in Latin (Magnificat anima mea Dominum, Te Deum laudamus), alongside more introspective compositions like De profundis clamavi ad te Domine. Through Sweelinck’s masterful counterpoint and rich harmonies, listeners experience the intense emotion and devotion that characterize his music.

A remarkable journey through the works of this influential Dutch composer, showcasing his full brilliance. A must-have for lovers of vocal polyphony.
