The Amsterdam Andalusisch Orkest
Founded in 2011, the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra aims to connect Andalusian artistic and cultural heritage with the present. The orchestra not only brings this rich musical tradition back to Europe but also integrates it with (both existing and original) stories, poetry, and theater. The expressive power of the music and the narratives behind it form a bridge between past and present. Their performances transport audiences across centuries, breathing new life into ancient melodies and stories.
The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra performs a diverse repertoire, spanning from Granada to Baghdad, across different periods and styles. From the rich Arabo-Andalusian tradition to mystical Eastern music, and from refined improvisational pieces from the Arab world to vibrant folk music from the Maghreb.
Through its unique Al-Andalus repertoire, original productions, and diverse collaborations, the orchestra has secured a distinctive place in the cultural landscape. For over a decade, it has been shaped by musicians from both the Netherlands and abroad.
After a highly successful try-out concert in 2020, Cappella Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra decided to collaborate more frequently. From the mesmerizing alBahr to the immensely successful When Paths Meet (Holland Festival 2022) featuring world star Sami Yusuf, their performances together have been nothing short of magical. When Cappella Amsterdam and the virtuosos of AAO join forces, the result is more than a concert—it’s an electrifying fusion of voices, traditions, and emotions that captivates every listener.
In 2026, Cappella Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra will reunite for a spectacular musical journey through the Cantigas de Santa Maria—where medieval devotion meets Andalusian passion.
