background
How would it sound if you took a walk through 12th-century Córdoba?
With Cantigas, you will travel musically back in time to this early medieval metropolis. You will hear music that may have been played there at that time: a selection of Marian songs from the Cantigas de Santa Maria and traditional Arabo-Andalusian works that are still sung and played today in the Maghreb.
The Cantigas were compiled at the behest of King Alfonso X, also known as “the king of the three religions,” during a time when Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived peacefully together. Their mutual influences can be heard in the rhythmic structures of the music and the themes of the performed works. To make this musical journey through time as authentic as possible, the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra plays instruments that were used in the twelfth century.
