background
In the heart of ancient Aleppo, long an important trading hub on the Silk Road, people from different backgrounds came together and formed a vibrant and dynamic community. Byzantine palaces, mosques, churches and synagogues defined the multicolored streetscape with their rich and diverse architecture, and de streets were permeated with the sound of traders offering their wares, while the smell of spices and flowers from the bazaars filled the air…
In the programme Aleppo, Cappella Amsterdam, accompanied by talented musicians from Syria, performs a musical ode to this glorious metropolis. Through music and spoken word, they celebrate the resilience of the Aleppine community and honor the diversity of Aleppo, a city that once stood as a symbol of cultural exchange and artistic flourishing. A new composition by Fawaz Baker, former director of the Conservatory of Music in Aleppo, will also be performed. It is dedicated to Assyrian composer and pioneer musicologist Nouri Eskandar, on the occasion of his death in late 2023.
Be part of this evening filled with music, culture, and connection, and let yourself be carried away.
"Most Dutch people with no background in the Middle East, will not be familiar with the wealth of culture and music from ancient Aleppo. I cordially invite everyone to come see this special performance. Cappella Amsterdam always guarantees top quality and with the Syrian guest musicians it promises to be a concert to remember."
