Who is...

What is… the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra (NKO)

The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra (NKO) is one of the leading ensembles in Dutch classical music. Since its foundation in 1955, the orchestra has built a strong reputation, partly due to its combination of impeccable technical refinement and expressive performances. With a flexible line-up of 25 to 45 musicians, the NKO plays a wide repertoire, ranging from baroque to contemporary compositions.

Musical direction

The ensemble was founded by violinist and conductor Szymon Goldberg, who served as musical director until 1979. Under his leadership, the orchestra established itself as a chamber music ensemble of international standing. In the following decades, the baton was passed to conductors such as Antoni Ros-Marbà, Hartmut Haenchen, Yakov Kreizberg, and Marc Albrecht, each of whom left his own mark on the orchestra’s musical course. Since 2004, violinist Gordan Nikolić has fulfilled the role of musical director, leading the orchestra from his position as concertmaster.

Collaborations

The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra works in close collaboration with the Dutch National Opera and regularly performs at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. This cooperation offers the orchestra the opportunity to perform both opera productions and independent concert programs. The ensemble is known for its lively interaction with soloists and conductors and has worked with various renowned musicians over the years. We, Cappella Amsterdam, also enjoy working with the NKO. For example, we have shared the stage for productions such as Schumann, Purcell and Beethoven, and Bach’s Magnificat.

Broad repertoire

The NKO’s programming includes a wide range of works, from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions. The orchestra constantly seeks a balance between well-known compositions and lesser-known works, which gives their performances an adventurous quality. This approach effectively appeals to both seasoned classical music lovers and new listeners. With its varied programming and energetic performance style, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra remains an essential part of the Dutch music landscape.
