What is Meesters&Gezellen?

about meesters&gezellen

Since 2011, Meesters&Gezellen has offered twenty young singing students, the Gezellen, the opportunity to develop their talents in a professional a capella chamber choir. Under the guidance of leading choir conductors and experienced singers – the Meesters – the Gezellen learn the art of ensemble singing at the highest level.

The aim of Meesters&Gezellen is to build a bridge between the training of singers at the conservatory and the harsh reality outside, where it is very difficult to build an economic existence with solo singing alone. Ensemble singing is a skill in itself and a singer who combines solo singing with ensemble singing has a much greater chance of survival.

The young singers develop their skills and expand their professional network. Many former Gezellen have now found a place in ensembles such as the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart, the Helsinki Chamber Choir, Chorwerk Ruhr and of course Cappella Amsterdam.

In 2025, Cappella Amsterdam is once part of this unique concert series: Meesters&Gezellen will be conducted by chief conductor Daniel Reuss, who introduces four singers from Cappella Amsterdam to fulfill the function of the Meesters. These Meesters guide the young singers – one per voice group – by rehearsing with them, performing in concerts, and making music together in a non-directive manner. No direct instructions, but learning by doing, by singing together and experiencing.
