background
Zapp Mattheus was written by two-time Gouden Griffel (Golden Slate Pencil) winner Simon van der Geest. Together with Niek Idelenburg, he created a family concert: a compact St Matthew Passion of about one hour. Concise, but with the utmost respect for Bach’s masterpiece and the biblical story, making this beautiful music accessible to everyone.
Two friends tell the story of football coach Jesus and his friends; about friendship, betrayal, and playing football until it gets dark. For writer Simon van der Geest, football is the perfect metaphor for the story of Jesus. Jesus is the coach, the twelve disciples form his football team. The Last Supper becomes the Last Match.
