The Well-Tempered Songbook

Polyphony from the Renaissance to the present

★ ★ ★ ★ ★
"The cherry on top is an Ave Maria for chorus and piano. Charles Gounod adapted it in 1859 around the well-known prelude that opens Bach's collection. Conductor Daniel Reuss thankfully steers clear of the sentimentality that often stifles this piece. A beautiful idea to combine it with Libeer.” - Guido van Oorschot, De Volkskrant

background

Cappella Amsterdam, together with top Belgian pianist Julien Libeer, presents a unique program: The Well-Tempered Songbook.

Around this beautiful work by Bach, Cappella Amsterdam and the Belgian top pianist Julien Libeer (1987), under the direction of chief conductor Daniel Reuss, will present a rich choral program featuring repertoire from well before and long after Bach’s time. In addition to excerpts from Bach’s Das wohltemperierte Klavier, you will hear works by composers such as Josquin des Prez, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, David Lang, and a world premiere of William Knight’s latest composition Walking with Thomas Hardy. This program showcases polyphony from the Renaissance to the present under the leadership of chief conductor Daniel Reuss.

The seven centuries of music history brought together in this program are visualized in the campaign image by allowing the portraits of composers Josquin des Prez, Felix Mendelssohn, and David Lang to flow into one another.
