background
With De rechtvaardigen (The Just), based on the book of the same name by Jan Brokken (1949), we bring the story of Dutch consul Jan Zwartendijk, who risked his life for the freedom of others. Zwartendijk is a savior of thousands of lives—of Polish Jewish men, women, and children fleeing to Lithuania and desperately seeking a way to leave Europe. He issued visas that allowed Jews to travel from Lithuania through the Soviet Union to Vladivostok, then onward to Japan and eventually to America, Shanghai, and other countries, thus saving them from the Holocaust.
An impressive story that will also delve into the life of the rescued Leo Adler and his wife Bella Hamburg, who reached New York after a six-year flight but longed for their original continent and language.
Through the narration by Jan Brokken, interwoven with music for choir and saxophone quartet, we experience in this through-composed concert how the good deeds of one person can save thousands of lives.
The concert in Kampen has been cancelled.
