background
Masterful ballets about war, power and hope.
One of the most moving works in the twentieth-century dance history is Kurt Jooss’ anti-war ballet The Green Table. Since Het Nationale Ballet always strives to offer the most relevant program possible, it feels like the right choice to bring back this significant and unfortunately very topical choreography, especially in this time of war. Therefore, the decision was made to replace the original season opener Celebrate! with a program titled Shadows.
Cappella Amsterdam and Het Balletorkest, under the direction of conductor Matthew Rowe, will provide the musical accompaniment for Yugen, the opening piece of the evening. British choreographer Wayne McGregor drew inspiration for this creation, which received much acclaim in London, from Leonard Bernstein’s monumental Chichester Psalms. The famous ceramic artist Edmund de Waal is responsible for the set design for this exceptionally musical ballet.
