Music about life and death, from intimate to ecstatic
The Spanish violinist and conductor Roberto González-Monjas makes his debut with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra with a surprising program featuring Dutch cellist Harriet Krijgh as the soloist.
‘This programme is meant to be a Luctor et Emergo (I struggle and I emerge). It begins with one of the darkest works in music history and ends with a brilliant victory,” says Willem de Bordes, artistic director of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.
What can you expect?
Purcell’s impressive Funeral Sentences is now regularly performed in concert halls, but this music was originally written for the funeral ceremony of Queen Mary II. Together with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Cappella Amsterdam will bring Purcell’s Funeral Sentences to life in a special way, evoking the ecclesiastical context of the time.
