background
The Bow and the Reed – this is the title Layale Chaker has given her cycle for solo violin and a cappella choir. In this composition, the Lebanese violinist combines contemporary Aramaic poetry by Nineb Lamassu with traditional poetry. In her music, Layale Chaker references both classical Arabic precedents and Western traditions, as well as jazz.
Hamzaad was inspired by a poem by the Persian poet هوشنگ ابتهاج (Hooshang Ebtehaj) about longing for a once-heard voice among the stars. Aftab Darvishi, a highly sought-after composer, has previously collaborated with the Kronos Quartet, Hermesensemble, Oerknal, and De Ereprijs. Not so long ago, her opera Turan Dokht premiered at the Holland Festival.
