Lassus: Penitential Psalms

under the direction of chief conductor Daniel Reuss

"In terms of performance, Reuss did not beat around the bush: sometimes the music unfolded floating in wide arcs, then again, with a slight forcing of the beat, in a powerful attack. And the syncopated sway of the voices against each other was always wonderful to listen to."

background

The texts of the seven Penitential Psalms by Orlando di Lasso – also known as Orlandus Lassus – are taken from the Old Testament book of Psalms. In it, it is all about guilt and atonement. In his Penitential Psalms, Lassus combines the musical beauty of thoughtful polyphony with the best use of the expressive charge of the texts he follows closely.

Are you familiar with our CD Psalms of Repentance featuring Alfred Schnittke’s penitential psalms? Whereas Schnittke appeals to grand emotion, Lassus is all about the smaller gesture: pure beauty worked out to the smallest detail.
