"The Groot Omroepkoor and Cappella Amsterdam sang magnificently against each other with a wind force of nine, while Van Zweden, with the superbly playing orchestra, including a wind machine and three extra piccolos, stirred things up even more."

background

In 1843, Wagner was at the beginning of his career. Two now-forgotten youth operas and a grand opera had not brought him the success he had expected. With Der fliegende Holländer, that changed. The composer was inspired by a satirical novella by Heinrich Heine, which takes place during a theater performance in Amsterdam. The story features a cursed Dutch sea captain who can be redeemed by the love of a woman.

Conductor Jaap van Zweden, who would debut Der fliegende Holländer at the Metropolitan Opera in 2023, now conducts Wagner’s first success in the ZaterdagMatinee.
