background
Cappella Amsterdam frequently collaborates with the Dutch Chamber Orchestra. This time, they present a program centered around Bach. He composed a radiant version of the Magnificat for soloists, choir and a festively orchestrated ensemble featuring three trumpets and timpani. These instruments are also featured in Orchestral Suite No. 3. With its brisk opening, famous Air and upbeat Gigue, it is the perfect prelude to this concert.
Brahms was a great admirer of Bach, evident in his vocal works, such as the moving motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen? (op. 74/1) and the canonic Geistliches Lied (op. 30). A special highlight of this concert is the contribution from American composer Caroline Shaw, the youngest Pulitzer Prize winner ever in 2012. Her Music in Common Time is a splendid and soothing soundscape for choir and orchestra, which will be performed for the first time in the Netherlands.
