discover

The internationally renowned composer, organist, organ builder, and music teacher Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) was also known as the ‘Orpheus of Amsterdam’ in his time. His significant contributions to Franco-Flemish polyphony include both French psalm settings that closely follow the tenets of the Reformation and sacred vocal works in Latin, of which the Magnificat is one.

This album features both French psalm settings (Du fonds de ma pensée, Ainsi qu’on oit le cerf bruire) and Latin compositions (Magnificat anima mea Dominum, Te Deum laudamus), as well as more introspective works such as De profundis clamavi ad te Domine. Sweelinck’s masterful counterpoint and rich harmonies allow the listener to experience the intense emotion and devotion that characterize his music.

A special journey through the work of this influential Dutch composer, where his genius truly shines. A must-have for lovers of vocal polyphony.
