Arvo Pärt’s magnum opus, the “Kanon Pokajanen” (“Canon of Repentance,” 1998), retains the language of its Eastern Orthodox sources, Church Slavonic, and follows Orthodox tradition in avoiding instruments, though it is not intended for church use. It is a contemplative concert work — utterly mesmerizing, despite modern-leaning harmonies — and enchanting.
